January 2000

A willingness to serve, for a lot of people, is that they don't want to or they want to control the whole scene, and let no one else enjoy the fruits of the labor.

Jesus said He did not come to be served but to serve. He was willing to be a servant of all. Yet Jesus shared some of His work with His disciples, because He wanted them to enjoy, and even learn to be servants too.

It is to bad when in the Body of Christ people don't want to help out, especially when tasks need to be done for different Bible studies, classes, or talks that go on. It is in our helping one another, serving one another, that helps the Body of Christ to run really well. When we have a willing heart to serve one another there us true unity, a balance and a peace that comes.

If we are in a position for ministry and are able to help or assist others in the ministry for the Body of Christ, then we should do so. Not to help our brothers and sisters in Christ is the same as not helping Jesus. In turn we misrepresent Jesus Christ. How you ask? Well, if they asked Jesus to help them, I believe and know that He would! Dr. Paul Richardson wrote on one of the ministry studies for the Institute for Christian Works that you must "Do your best to comply with the prayerful counsel of godly leadership of those the Lord has placed in authority in the Church." God has placed certain people in charge because of their abilities and to get the job done and do it with a genuine heart for Jesus. To defy those that God has placed in the leadership role, is the same as to defy God.

Do we love God? Then we must abide in His Word, and we are to help one another in Christ Jesus. When an Elder, pastor, or a teacher asks us for help, it is most often because God has asked them to do these things such as: preach, teach, talk about issues facing the Body of Christ, or help setting up for a special function. Sometimes they may need help in getting materials together of just having some copies made. It may be at the last minute or even several weeks in advance. The bottom line is that God wants something done. When we refuse to serve, whom are we really refusing to serve?

In most cases those who do a lot for the Church are pretty happy because they're joining in where God is working. Those who are not, well they like to isolate themselves, separate and are just plain grouchy, miserable because they kick against the goals. I was recently asked to sing in a Church function. Well, I didn't really want to, but the Holy Spirit told me to sing, because I am a part of that ministry and I am representing Jesus Christ!

Let's not be the ones who say "I love the Lord" then have no notion to even help our brothers or sisters in Christ in their appointed ministries. So the challenge is this my friends, the new year, be willing to reach out and help others in the ministry wherever you are. Let the Light and Love of Jesus Christ shine forth in your supporting others. Be a willing servant for God! Get involved, be a Christian of Action and in Love!

God bless and encourage you!
